Taking the Mystery Out of Remodeling – by Reva Kussmaul

Interviewing a Contractor?

I was talking with a networking colleague yesterday as she thanked me for talking about clarity in communication when it comes to the remodeling relationship, she relayed to me it took over 8 months to remodel her kitchen. The main reason was: the contractor kept leaving to take other jobs. Taking other jobs is fine as long as you have the “crew-power” to do them all. If not, it is not OK to leave someone hanging.

So, one of the questions to ask when interviewing contractors is: will you finish my job as promised or do you go to other jobs? If you do go elsewhere will you have a team working on my project?

I also coach contractors to: make sure you stay in communication with the client. If you’re going to be gone for 1 or 2 days – whatever the reason – let them know. You may know why you are “disappearing” but they don’t and it opens the space for not trusting you or the process. This doesn’t make for creating a good relationship or getting quality referrals.
